Waldron Parish

What? And Why?

We’re a two-church parish, rural in the village of Waldron, semi-urban at Cross in Hand on the fringes of Heathfield. Our parish church is the beautiful early-medieval All Saints in Waldron and its “daughter church” is the delightful St Bartholomew’s in Cross in Hand.

You can be assured of a warm (though unobtrusive!) welcome at any of our wide variety of services or events, whether you’re on your own or bringing your family, whether you’ve started the journey of Christian faith or whether you haven’t, whether you think you believe in God or whether you don’t. Don’t worry about why you want to come – just come. It’s what people have always done down the ages, whether they’ve chosen to stay on or not.

But our commitment to our community isn’t just about church services. We try to serve the whole community of Waldron and Cross in Hand, churchgoers and non-churchgoers alike. People of all sorts tend to turn to their local church at times of great joy or great sorrow in their lives – and we hope you will do so, because it’s your church. But at other times, if you’re feeling lonely or worried, or you’d just like someone to talk to, do please give us a call.

We’d just say that we’re your local household of the Christian faith, trying to live our lives as witnesses and disciples of the living Christ and, in doing so, to change the world forever. But if you don’t know or even care what that means, it doesn’t matter – it’s just another way of saying: We’re here for you and would love to meet you. Whoever you are.

Sunday Services:

ALL SAINTS - The Parish Church

Thought to be on the site of an even earlier church, All Saints, a “jewel” amongst Sussex’s churches, was built during the 12th century, the first Rector being Bartholomew in 1195. It is nestled amongst ancient yews in its conservation-grade graveyard, on a high ridge, with stunning views. The interior, though much restored in the 1860s, is kept open daily, in beautiful condition, for the community, visitors and worshippers. We have a long-standing tradition for choral inclusion to our services, with disciplined choir, led by dedicated organists.

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW’S - The Sister Church

St. Bartholomew, or St. Bart’s as it is known locally, was once called “The Church in the Woods” (prior to the great storm of 1987), being almost completely hidden under the trees. It is a Chapel of Ease to All Saints, Waldron, having been built in 1863 to act as the parish church during the restoration and enlargement of All Saints. It is an archetypal Victorian Nave and Sanctuary building with a unique atmosphere.
