Music Development Plan
At Cross in Hand School, we believe that music should be an enjoyable experience for pupils and teachers and accessible to all. Throughout their time at Cross in Hand School, music is an integral part of school life, embedded across the whole curriculum. As a school, we are committed to providing a range of musical experiences for the children to access. These opportunities occur through discreetly taught music sessions and also across the wider curriculum.
Our music curriculum is an excellent way for us to explore, embrace and celebrate the diversity of our school community, recognising the contribution each pupil makes to this. We are also committed to raising the profile of music within the school and provide opportunities outside of timetabled music lessons for children to develop musical skills. Children are involved in their music teaching and learning through Pupil Voice questionnaires and this feeds back into provision.
At our school, music features in our curriculum from Early Years, as we recognise the benefits of singing and musical exploration from the very beginning of the children’s school journey. Music at Cross In Hand is delivered via the East Sussex music scheme, ‘Charanga’. This is a progressive scheme of work created by music specialists. Charanga ensures the objectives of the National Curriculum Model Music Curriculum for Key Stage One and Two are met through the coverage. Children and staff find this scheme and the resources enjoyable to engage with and highly motivating. There are CPD opportunities, meaning that staff are well equipped to deliver our music curriculum. The nature of the scheme ensures that the children have plenty of time to revisit and embed skills. Charanga gives children in Early Years, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two opportunitiesto listen to and appraise a variety of music, sing, explore instruments, compose music and perform. Some of these activities are completed in small groups or as whole class. Skillful differentiation allows music to be accessible to all, where appropriate for the individual pupils.
This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
